Trump blog

As Donald Trump almost daily cements his claim to be the worst president in US history, he appears to be inspiring others to do the same on less elevated levels.

Prominent among them is Florida governor Ron DeSantis. He seems to be attempting to please Trump by doing on a state level the same thing Trump is doing nationally. Trump seems to be bent on taking over state functions, notably elections, while DeSantis’ recent actions indicate an effort to control local governments, especially ones influenced by  Democrats.

In both cases, the men are being supported by sycophants who betray their oaths of office. The Sunsentinel seems worried that state legislators are not opposing DeSantis bogus tax cutting scheme in which he will eliminate property taxes, thereby forcing local governments to find ways to make up the loss with all manner of local fees. This idea is attracting widespread opposition, but not necessarily from the legislature, which can do much to prevent it.

The newspaper also is urging the legislature to punish former Attorney General Pam Bondi, for her disgraceful dismantling of the federal judicial system. Many people regard her actions as criminal, and the paper says at the least she should be disbarred in Florida.

And then there’s DeSantis‘s Gerrymandering of voting districts, an ego driven effort to retain power. Again, no real effort by the legislature to curtail this flagrant abuse of the system.

When we first covered Florida politics 50 years ago, the state had gone through a reformation that had made it a model for honest government. We have come a long way since then, but unfortunately, in the wrong direction.
